Our Story

Hickory River Designs is a father-daughter owned small but growing business located in scenic eastern Pennsylvania. We initially started creating pieces for our own homes as a way express ourselves and bring life to our ideas. We recently decided to start a new chapter and take our hobby and begin our journey as a small business.

What started as a creative outlet has grown into a way for us to share meaningful, handcrafted pieces with others.

The majority of our pieces that we create begins as a fallen or salvaged tree — sourced from our family-owned property, here in Eastern Pennsylvania as well as from our local neighbors. We love the idea of reclaiming the wood that would otherwise be discarded and give it a second life. Using our own sawmill, the wood is carefully milled, stacked, and air-dried for months (sometimes longer). Once ready, it’s kiln-dried in our workshop before becoming finished pieces made to last.

This shop is a true collaboration. Steve handles the woodworking — from planning the wood to CNC carving and laser work to lathe-turned bowls and vases. Shannon brings the pieces to life through staining, painting, sealing, resin work, and finishing details. Alongside this work, Shannon is also a stay-at-home mom, which makes flexibility, intentional craftsmanship, and meaningful work at home especially important to our family. Each item you find in our store has been handcrafted by us in our home shop. Our work ranges from carved wooden signs and turned vessels to resin-filled designs and handcrafted gaming dice. While each piece is different, they’re all made with the same care, patience, and attention to detail. We love creating different varieties of pieces that can be treasured for many years. We take great pride in creating our items with the same care and attention that we expect when buying pieces for our own home. Because we work with natural and reclaimed materials, no two items are ever exactly the same — and that’s part of what makes them special. Thank you for supporting our small, family-owned business and for helping us continue turning salvaged materials into meaningful, one-of-a-kind creations.
